Why your GA4 and Google Ads numbers do not match.
Some of the gap is normal. Some is a mistake. Here is how to tell which is which.

If GA4 says 40 conversions and Google Ads says 55, nobody is necessarily wrong. The tools count differently. Your job is to separate the normal differences from the errors.
Normal differences
- Attribution models: Google Ads credits the click that led to the conversion, and GA4 can credit another channel.
- Timing: Google Ads reports conversions on the day of the click, and GA4 reports them on the day they happened.
- Consent: when a visitor declines tracking, GA4 may not see them at all, while Google Ads can still model the conversion.
- Views and clicks: ad platforms can count view-through conversions, and GA4 generally does not.
Errors to look for
- The same conversion firing twice, for example on a page reload.
- A key event in GA4 that is not the same action as the conversion in Google Ads.
- Missing tags on some pages, or tags firing before consent is given.
- Links that strip the click ID, so GA4 loses the source.
- Test traffic and internal visits counted as real.
How to make the gap small and explainable
- Define one list of conversions and use the same names in every tool.
- Import GA4 key events into Google Ads only if you want Google to optimize toward them.
- Compare the tools against the CRM, because the CRM is the closest thing to the truth.
- Write down the expected gap, such as GA4 reads 10% to 20% lower, so a change stands out.
If the gap is larger than you can explain, a measurement audit is the right next step. Fix the tracking before you change the budget.
Questions.
Which number should I trust, GA4 or Google Ads?
Neither on its own. Use the CRM or your sales records as the reference, and use the tools to understand where leads came from.
Is a 10% to 20% gap normal?
A moderate gap is common because of attribution, timing and consent. A gap that keeps growing, or flips direction, usually points to a tracking error.
Can you fix it for me?
Yes. I audit GA4, Tag Manager and the ad accounts and deliver a ranked list of fixes, then implement them or hand your developer exact notes.
