Fractional marketing director or full-time hire?
A fractional director is a senior leader for a set number of days a week. Here is how to decide whether you need one.

Most companies ask about cost first. The better question is what you are buying: leadership, execution or both. Fractional works well for one of those and badly for another.
How fractional engagements are priced
A fractional marketing director is usually priced as a fixed monthly fee based on days per week and scope. You agree the deliverables and the fee in writing before work starts. Compare that with a full-time hire, where you also pay for benefits, recruiting, equipment and the time it takes to find the right person.
When fractional is the better choice
- You need senior judgment, but not five days a week of it.
- You have a team or agencies and nobody senior is directing them.
- You are launching something and need a plan, budget and owner for a quarter.
- You are hiring a full-time lead and want someone to hold the work in the meantime.
- The founder is still doing the marketing and it is taking over the week.
When a full-time hire is better
- The marketing workload fills a full week every week, with a team to manage daily.
- You need deep inside knowledge of one product that takes a year to build.
- Your sales cycle needs constant, daily cross-team coordination.
What to compare before you decide
- What exactly will be delivered in the first 30, 60 and 90 days.
- Who runs the work: the director, your team or an agency.
- How performance is measured and reported.
- What the handover looks like when the engagement ends.
If you are unsure, start with a quarter. It is long enough to set the plan and show results, and short enough to change course.
Questions.
How much does a fractional marketing director cost?
It depends on days per week and scope. I price engagements as a fixed monthly fee agreed in writing after a 30-minute call, so you know the cost before work begins.
Can a fractional director run paid media too?
Yes. I plan and run or direct paid media and fix measurement as part of the role, so strategy and execution stay connected.
How long should I plan to work with one?
Most engagements start at a quarter. Some end when a full-time hire is in place and others continue as a monthly advisory retainer.
